HVAC Airflow Problems Can Affect One Room or an Entire Floor
Not every uneven-temperature problem begins with insulation. A room may have inadequate airflow because a supply register is blocked by furniture, a return vent is obstructed, or a duct has become disconnected, damaged, or poorly sealed. Long duct runs to upper floors and additions can also lose heat or cooling before air reaches the room.
Closed interior doors can make a difference when a room does not have an effective return-air path. Air is supplied to the room but cannot circulate back to the system properly, reducing performance. Dirty filters, undersized equipment, unbalanced dampers, and aging HVAC components can create similar symptoms.
Still, HVAC adjustments should not be treated as a cure-all. Increasing airflow to a room that has major attic heat loss or uninsulated walls may provide only limited relief. A balanced solution addresses both the delivery of conditioned air and the home’s ability to retain it.

The recommendation should be specific to the property rather than a one-size-fits-all material or thickness. In some homes, air sealing and attic insulation deliver the most immediate improvement.
